Your Health and Care Number (H&C Number)

What Is a Health and Care Number (H&C Number)?

A Health and Care Number (H&C Number) uniquely identifies a patient within the NHS in Northern Ireland.  This number will be used from birth, throughout life, for receipt of Health and Social Services in Northern Ireland.

It is a 10-digit number.  The first two characters of the Health and Care Number (H&C Number) must always lie within the range 32 – 39.

Where Can I Find My Health and Care Number (H&C Number)?

If your medical card was issued after 2005, your Health and Care Number (H&C Number) is printed on it.

If you have an older medical card issued before 2005, your Health and Care Number (H&C Number) will not be printed on it.  In this case, you can find out your Health and Care Number (H&C Number) by:

  • Contacting your GP Practice and asking them to look it up for you.
  • Checking any recent correspondence from the NHS, e.g. hospital appointment letters.  Your Health and Care Number (H&C Number) will be stated on the letter.
  • Checking a recent prescription from your GP.  Your Health and Care Number (H&C Number) will be stated on the prescription.

Remember; due to the new rules, without producing your Health and Care Number (H&C Number) at the time of your appointment, your eye examination will not be free of charge.
